Amazing Grace
Scanning a newspaper one day, I read on the back page, in very bold
print AMAZING GRACE. I was very intrigued as to why this would be
on the sports page, as this made me think immediately of part of a song
we sing in church. “Amazing grace, how can it be, that thou my God
should die for me”, and the words Amazing Grace are in several other
songs we sing.
However, the article was about a South African golfer whose name
was Branden Grace who had achieved an historic score in an interna-
tional tournament. But my thoughts were still on the chorus where the
greatest historic achievement for us all happened. But you may ask
“why did God have to die for me?” Well the Bible tells us that “all have
sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 6v23). That is
going our own way instead of God’s. But the Bible also tells us that
“God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten son that whoso-
ever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John
3v16) and Romans 6v23 also tells us that “the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord”.
You see our sin has separated us from a holy God, but He still loves
us and wants a relationship with us., so He sent Jesus Christ, His only
Son, to bear our sins on the cross at Calvary. Jesus had led a sinless life,
but He was willing to die for our sins. If we believe in Him and ask Him
to come into our lives as Lord and Saviour, we are forgiven and receive
a new eternal life. We don’t have to work for it (as the golfer did) – our
salvation is free! “AMAZING GRACE” from a very gracious, loving
and forgiving God.
Because of Jesus dying on that cross to take the blame for our sins
which separated us from God, we are no longer under God’s law, but
under grace; that alone is “AMAZING GRACE”. Are you willing to
accept God’s amazing grace by receiving Jesus into your life.
