Record numbers for Cadet Week 2017 Boxing Club Sponsor
at Snettisham Beach Sailing Club
What does it take to keep 96 kids busy for a week in the summer?
Sailing can do it, although it isn’t a small undertaking! It takes many
club members and help from other sailing clubs and organisations
around the region that lent or hired additional boats to cope with the
numbers.
17 of our own SBSC RYA Accredited Instructors managed the
children, aged 8-16yrs, in groups according to age and sailing ability;
the younger and less experienced enjoyed learning to sail on the lakes
whilst those wishing to improve their sailing knowledge went on the
sea where they were coached on racing skills by some of the club’s
senior sailors.
I would like to say a thank you to a sponsor of the Boxing Club, Tony
McGinn MD at A McGinn Groundworks & Equestrian Construction
Ltd. Best Regards Leon Bolmeer/Geezers Boxing
The week began well in glorious sunshine with gentle breezes until
Wednesday when everything changed. Strong winds, gusting up to
48mph, continued into Thursday afternoon putting an end to all sailing.
Plan B was instigated, the children were kept entertained throughout
the bad weather by the instructor team using a variety if ingenious
games both on and off the water. Ever seen sailing in fancy dress?
Some fab costumes were produced on Friday for the 'Under The Sea'
theme day.
After sailing the evenings were busy with a full social programme;
a film night, karaoke night, a craft day, a quiz night for all ages and a
disco made sure they were all tired out and ready for bed. On Saturday
morning, following the presentation of certificates and medals, the
week was rounded off with the traditional and ever popular game, of
“Mud Rugby” held on the mud flats off Snettisham Beach.
Managing an event of this nature takes a great deal of advance
organisation and planning for which we thank our RYA Chief
Instructor, Jane Ellison and Becky Playford. Also we could not have
survived without all the parents who helped throughout the week
behind the bar and at the various sailing venues on the beach and
around the lakes.
Catering for the needs of 96 hungry children from 9-8 o’clock each
day over an entire week is no easy task but it was admirably managed
by the club’s caterers, “West Norfolk Flying Chef”. Carolyn Wright,
our catering manager, when asked for a comment about Cadet Week
said “It’s loud. VERY LOUD!”.
Planning is already underway for Cadet Week 2018. Bookings for
this ever popular event will be taken from January 2018. NEW TERM OF BALLROOM & LATIN CLASSES AT
