We managed to cram in quite a lot before we headed off for the summer and we’re excited to share those last few days of term with you now!
Beach Trips
It’s the time of year when we can make the most of our fabulous coastal location. As is tradition, on the last Monday of the summer term, Pre Prep enjoyed their fun morning at Old Hunstanton beach. The children love the opportunity to mix with one another as they collect and explore shells and stones, work together to build the most creative sandcastle and enjoy a morning snack by the sea. Just a few days earlier, Divisions V and VI also took advantage of the fine weather with a visit to Old Hunstanton Beach to undertake a series of Geography based challenges. The classes used their learning from the year to recreate connecting features of Human and Physical Geography, and there was some super collaboration between the children as well as much excitement to see some unexpected live attractions in the form of jellyfish and a passing seal.
Public Speaking Competition
The final of the Prep Public Speaking Competition took place during the penultimate week of term. The audience was treated to a lovely variety of performances, including a poem about meatballs, moving speeches about loved ones, influential people and places special to the children. The older pupils presented very persuasive speeches on the important issues of deforestation, homelessness, cruelty to animals, the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence and the health risks of vaping. The audience appreciated the passion of the children for their chosen topics and every performance was exceptional.
The final was filled with giggles, moments that made you really think and even the chance to shed a little tear. It truly was a fabulous morning. A huge well done to all the finalists and, of course, to everyone who took part.
Children’s Summer Ball
To conclude the Parents’ Committee calendar for the children was the Annual Children’s Summer Ball. This year it was held at Sedgeford Village Hall and the theme was Aloha! The children, from Reception to Division VIII, had a great time celebrating the end of a busy year. There was music from E.S. Entertainments who kept them dancing, face painting from Leah's Little Faces who adding that extra something special to their already wonderful party outfits, and ice creams from Solar Scoops to give the children a delicious treat to end their special night.
Speech Day & Prizing Giving
We are proud of so many traditions we have here at Glebe and one of our greatest is the Old Aquilians' and Leavers' Service held St Mary's Church, Old Hunstanton and the annual Prize Giving Celebrations held in a marquee on the school grounds afterwards, allowing us to end every school year on a high with achievements and celebrations.
The service beautifully combined tradition with select musical performances by our House Music winners. There were performances from our Prep choir and readings from pupils and staff. Back at school, both children and adults enthusiastically cheered on our prize winners. The day was further brightened by remarkable performances from Eagles, Mini Strictly, Ballet and more. Inspirational speeches by the Chair of Governors Phil Haslam, our Headmaster Louis Taylor, and our Head and Deputy Head of School, who bid farewell to the class of 2023, made it a truly remarkable and fitting send-off as we headed into the much-awaited summer holidays.
Farewell to Mr Taylor and Mr Gladstone
Our last day of term this year did not just see us say goodbye to our Class of 2023, but we also said thank you and goodbye to Louis Taylor, our Headmaster and Rob Gladstone, our Deputy Head. Mr Taylor now looks ahead to a new chapter in Hertfordshire as he takes on the role of Headmaster at St Aubyns in Woodford Green. Mr Gladstone is also off on new adventure, including opportunities for further study and travel. As a school we are incredibly grateful for all they both gave to the Glebe community and most importantly the children during their service, and we wish them every success in the future. Mr Taylor is formerly handing over the reins to Mr Adrian Stewart during the summer break, who we all had the pleasure of meeting at Speech Day.
Old Aquilian Cricket Match
Away from the official school business, the summer is also a great time to optimise our facilities and to enjoy time socially with one another. On the Saturday before we broke for summer, we enjoyed a fabulous afternoon of family cricket at the annual Old Aquilian Cricket match, where Old Aquilians faced the Glebe Senior Prep players. The weather was kind, the non-playing children had fun practising in the nets and playing in the playground, and the spectators enjoyed a great game of cricket!
National Rotary Young Writer Award 2023
We absolutely cannot forgo mentioning the wonderful news published last month in Town & Around about the National Rotary Young Writer Award. A huge congratulations to Old Aquilian and past Head of School Kitty Robinson on winning the National Rotary Young Writer Award 2023. An additional congratulations goes to current pupil Verity Snaith who came second in the East Anglia Regional Award. Very well done to both girls! You have made everyone at Glebe proud!
Summer Fun Camp
And finally, since school finished, we enjoyed hosting our Summer Fun Camp at school. Several children enjoyed a week of crafting, cooking, forest school, playing a variety of sports as well as visiting local attractions. Once our friends at other local schools had also finished for their summer break, we were delighted to open our doors to many more local children who have joined in with the Big Fun Club, Cricket Club and Football Club. It’s great to see our facilities being used throughout the summer holiday as we work in partnership with Alive Oasis in Hunstanton and host a variety of summer activity clubs Monday - Friday.
