D uring the 2023 summer season, one of the biggest OTA’s (Online Travel
Agency) reported that bookings were 17% down on the previous season.
The biggest ‘threat’ to survival in many cases was something every household in the
town also recognised – our overhead costs, like electricity, gas, water, mortgage/loan
interest rates, food, fuel etc etc. Looking at ways to reduce or contain these costs is and
continues to be a thankless task.
What are businesses crying out for on a daily basis…..more visitors…especially
during the ‘winter’ months like November – April and here is the challenge.
If you were in the town on Xmas Day to watch the swim then you will have seen
and heard something rarely experienced during winter….lots and lots of visitors (and
residents) and the tills ringing in shops and cafes.
Seeing more visitors in Hunstanton will benefit us all in the long run and for those
of you shaking your heads or raising your eyebrows, think about it in a much broader
sense than being cheesed off because there is nowhere to park (badly?) in the High
Street, your fav coffee shop is busy, having to queue in your fav shop or similar….
thinking about me, me and me is not the answer!
Some new ideas to rejuvenate the town to make Sunny Hunny an experience that
makes guests come back and tell their friend lets make the destination of choice! At
present we can make life difficult for visitors as well as sometimes unpleasant and a
lot of effort should be focussed on the winter months although many changes would
affect summer in a positive way as well.
I know of many fairly simple ideas that can make a change and then there are lots of
ideas that involve many of us in making an effort, giving our time but importantly
enjoying this….that attitude is felt by visitors as well…believe me!
