Day Centre’s ruby anniversary
Gill Brown
he Day Centre celebrated 40 years of opening this year and I
have taken a photo of Mary Parson, one of the founder members
Twho, lucky for us, is still with us. She was telling me that Sir
Henry Bellingham MP used to be our president but because of work
commitments in Parliament had to give up the post. It was then taken
over by Brian Devlin and now Peter Atterbury.
In 1997 Mary Parson received a civic award for voluntary services.
In 1979 she was a member of the Royal British Legion Women’s
Section and volunteers were called for serving refreshments at the
newly formed Day Centre, Mary volunteered immediately and has
been there ever since.
Over the years the club has had wonderful support; the Rev Michael
H Sellors of St Edmund’s Church Hunstanton was a good friend of the
Day Centre often going on outings with everybody. When he went to
Jerusalem, Mary kept in touch with him; he always wanted to know
what was happening at the Day Centre.
I made a cake that is on the table; I couldn’t let this milestone pass.
We all work very hard to keep the centre going, meeting the 3rd
Tuesday of every month. Our numbers range from 30-42 and we
always welcome new members or ones that haven’t been for a while.
Our next outing will be Christmas lunch at the Le Strange Hotel, Old
Hunstanton in December.
