Monthly talks
The next talk is at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 16 May 2018. We welcome
back local author Mary Mackie. Mary will be talking about her latest
publication “Hunstanton’s Highland Heroes” which is a fascinating
story of how in 1915 the town welcomed and was entertained by the
Highland Mounted Brigade of some 600 men and an equal number of
horses under the command of Lord Lovat. The information was
gathered together by John Smith and Tony Armstrong along with Nigel
Day, the new owner of Dreamy Hollow in Docking. Admission £1 for
members, £3 for visitors includes refreshments.
Heritage Centre
During the Summer, the Centre is open on Wednesdays, Saturday,
Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 1 pm until 5 pm. Heacham
has been the first village to be featured; Snettisham follows from the
end of April until the middle of June when it will be the turn of
Dersingham. The displays show aspects of the history, the important
buildings, the conservation area and the magnificent church. Mrs.
Terry Ashworth would be pleased to hear of anyone who would wish
to join the band of volunteers who staff the centre. She can be
contacted on 01485 535292.
Mary Rhodes 1924-2018
Although ‘Born and Bred’ in Hunstanton, during the past few years,
Mary has been living near Acle. This lady’s funeral was held on 10
March. Christine Earnshaw, Tony Armstrong and John Smith
represented the town’s various organisations. Some of the books that
she wrote are available in the Heritage Centre for a minimum donation
of £1 that will be put towards the cost of memorial plaque.
The building of a new pier at Hunstanton
Although the Hunstanton Heritage Pier Community Trust (HHPCT)
sent answers to the 23 questions posed by the Coastal Community
Team (CCT), these did not seem to satisfy the Borough Councillors
on the Committee who voted not to support the Pier Project at the CCT
Committee meeting on 21st March 2018. The reason(s) why these
Borough Councilors did not support the proposal ‘in principle’ are not
clear and the Trustees of HHPCT have requested a meeting with the
Borough Councillors concerned.
The re-instatement of a Rail link from King’s Lynn
to Hunstanton
A presentation was made to the CCT because the project team wish to
obtain a little of the £40m Coastal Community Fund in order to expand
the railway heritage display near the coal shed gallery so that it can act
as a base for information about the project, to consolidate support and
raise funds for a thorough feasibility study about the type of railway
and the optimum route.
