Cooking up a storm at Smithdon
Fred Hargreaves, Ella Tuckwood & Holly Finch win prizes at Smithdon ‘Young Chef’

ovember 27th was tasting day at
Smithdon High School. Ms Angela
NPleasants led her team of budding
Young Chefs in the first stages of a National
Competition organised by the Rotary Club of
Hunstanton & District and sponsored
nationally by Berio Olive Oil and locally by
Hunstanton Tesco. The Rotary ‘Young Chef’
national winner and parent will win a week in
Tuscany hosted by Filippo Berio and his
chefs.
Thirty-eight Year 9 students competed
within the school, from which six finalists
competed for cash prizes and entry to compete
in the North West Norfolk regionals to be held
in King’s Lynn in the spring of 2019. Chives
of Hunstanton High Street will be featuring
the winning meal as a ‘January Special’.
Angela told Hunstanton Town and Around

nutritional content, cost, presentation and Eric Bartkowiak and Fred Hargreaves
taste”. Tasting the meals were Cllr Amanda
Bosworth (Mayor of Hunstanton), Hilary
Farrell (President, Hunstanton Rotary), John
Crofts (President Elect – Hunstanton Rotary),
Peter Atterbury (Former President –
Hunstanton Rotary) and Sophie Gohegan (Mr
Bun the Baker). The judges declared Fred
Hargreaves first place with his Curried
Parsnip Soup and Chickpea Curry. Runner up
Ella Tuckwood cooked Star Salmon with a
Luscious Lemon Mousse dessert and Holly
Finch’s menu was a Bacon and Mushroom
Tagliatelle followed by Caramel Ripple
Cheesecake.
The thirty-eight students were set a budget
of £5 with ingredients provided free of charge
by Tesco Hunstanton. At the next stage Fred
and Ella will be given a budget of £10 and one
hour to cook a three-course meal.
Hunstanton and District Rotary Club and
Hunstanton Tesco donated the competition
aprons to the school, and Sophie Gohegan is
