FLOOD MEMORIAL
Regarding Richard’s comments on the removal of the Flood Memorial,
I wonder if you could pass on to him that as a Royal British Legion
member, I strongly feel that the Flood Memorial should be situated
close to The Cenotaph in The Esplanade Gardens as it commemorates
so many of our Brothers in Arms from The US Forces, who were over
here not a long time after the 2nd World War ended helping to keep us
safe from the growing Soviet threat. That they gave their lives whilst
still serving, speaks volumes that we in The Hunstanton Branch of The
Royal British Legion would like the Hunstanton Flood Memorial to
be close to the Town’s War Memorial. Indeed as the custodians of
Remembrance viz a viz The National Arboretum at Alrewas, Staffs,
which has memorials to The Police, The RNLI, The Donors of vital
organs for Transplants and many other organisations, we feel quite
strongly that the Flood Memorial should be co-located to the Town’s
War Memorial.
Best Wishes,
John Crisford
FLOOD MEMORIAL
Regarding Dick Melton’s (Page from the Sage) article in the January
issue about the memorial stone to the 1953 flood victims being moved
to another location.
The mere idea is outrageous and should never even be considered.
It has been in its present location for the last 60 plus years The
perfect site opposite the cenotaph on Reis Leming way. (One of the
Heroes on that dreadful night.)
LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS!!!
Angela & Peter Kavanagh.
FLOOD MEMORIAL
Congratulations on achieving national recognition for your excellent
magazine.
On the subject of the Flood Memorial, I fully support the views of
Dick Melton and Richard Bird that there is no reason to remove it to
another location. It occupies a relevant position opposite the war
memorial and clearly could not withstand being dismantled and rebuilt;
to despoil it would be an act of vandalism.
In terms of improvement, there is scope to remodel the small garden
in which it stands by building up the soil level to cover the rather
unsightly concrete base of the memorial. Beyond that, it remains a
fitting reminder and should not be touched.
Thanks and regards,
Nigel Blake
CHARITY POETRY BOOK RAISES OVER £1,000
I would like to thank everyone who has purchased a copy of my book
'Brancaster Beach and other Norfolk poems' - together we have raised
an amazing £1,000, which has already been handed over to a charity
project in Ghana, West Africa, to build toilets and hand washing
facilities at a village Primary School. It is not the most glamorous of
projects but one of the most essential and with your support this project
can now go ahead. Books are still available at The Hare and the Hen
pottery, Burnham Deepdale, the Arts and Craft Centre at Old
Hunstanton, Brancaster village Post Office or phone
01485210623 . All profits (after printing and retail costs) will
continue to fund this project until completion. There is really no way
to describe how important this is or how grateful the school will be for
your help. THANK YOU.
Best wishes
Jeni Boyd
