First word
Welcome to the February edition of Town and Around.
February 2nd is Candlemas Day; this ancient festival marks the
midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring
equinox. Also known as the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed
Virgin Mary and Feast of the Presentation of our Lord Jesus, it
commemorates the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The festival is
called Candlemas because this was the day that all the Church's candles
for the year were blessed.
There are many sayings and beliefs about the weather associated
with Candlemas Day, essentially if the weather is warm and sunny
there is more winter to come, and if the weather is dreadful on that day
then the worst of the winter is over. Looking at the long-range forecast
today, rain is expected on 2nd - and I never thought I’d be hoping for
rain! COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING RATES ex-VAT & SIZES
