*Dementia is a progressive brain condition that causes a decline in cognitive abilities, such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning. It can affect a person's ability to perform everyday activities, and can also impact their behaviour, mood, and personality. Dementia is caused by a number of diseases that damage the brain and destroy nerve cells over time. Although it's more common as people age, dementia is not a normal part of ageing and not everyone develops it. Some people may develop dementia in midlife.

Some types of dementia include:

Alzheimer's disease: The most common type of dementia

Vascular dementia: The second most common type of dementia, early signs include problems with planning, organizing, and making decisions

Mixed dementia: A combination of more than one type of dementia, most commonly Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia

Symptoms of dementia can include:

  • Memory loss
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Finding it hard to carry out familiar daily tasks, such as getting confused over the correct change when shopping
  • Struggling to follow a conversation or find the right word
  • Being confused about time and place
  • Mood changes

An early diagnosis can help slow the progression of dementia and help people maintain their mental function for longer. (*Source NHS – This is for information purposes only. For medical advice or diagnosis, consult a professional).
