On Friday 24th June, Cobble Hill Winery’s Sparkling Rosé won the Gold Medal for Sparkling Wine in the prestigious 2022 Wines of Great Britain National Awards, known as the Oscars of British winemaking. Farmer and winemaker Robert Perowne called the Gold Medal ‘a great honour’.
Cobble Hill is a 9 acre vineyard on an ancient south-facing glacial moraine just outside the beautiful village of Burnham Market in Norfolk, just two miles from the coast, growing vines which were first planted in 2016 with the first wine produced in 2018. Robert Perowne’s family have farmed this land for generations and has diversified into wine, as well as producing his famous onions and other arable crops. The 2021 harvest produced 15,000 bottles and the winery are hoping for similar this year.
Cobble Hill produce two white wines, Bacchus and Chardonnay, a Pinot Noir Rosé and now the award winning Sparkling Rosé. The Gold Medal Cobble Hill Sparkling Rosé is classic ‘Champagne-style’ Pinot Noir, and this sparkling wine takes two years to produce and the first bottles from the 2019 harvest were sold in 2021.
Robert Perowne, owner and Winemaker of Cobble Hill said: “We are delighted to have received a Gold Medal in the Wines of Great Britain National Awards for our 2019 Sparkling Rosé. To be named alongside some of the finest vineyards in England is a great honour and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for English Sparkling Wine! We would like to thank our dedicated team here as well as our wonderful customers and stockists who have supported us so fantastically.
”
Last year Cobble Hill opened their brand new £250,000 winery on the family farm, just outside Burnham Market. The grapes were harvested from the vineyard and loaded onto an ancient 1960’s tractor (the only one which will fit between the rows of vines!) and then transported to the winery to be pressed. A new tasting area and visitor centre will be opening on the vineyard in 2022 and guests are also invited to visit the winery and learn more about how the wine is made.
