The future is bright for Rollason Stage School

Functioning as an integral component of the performing arts scene in west Norfolk is Rollason Stage School, a leading organisation that describe themselves as “a traditional dance school vibe with a modern twist.” Principals Michelle and Lucy-Rose Rollason and their family are all acclaimed performers in their own right and are a wealth of knowledge on the world of performing. Here, Lucy-Rose and Michelle speak to Town & Around about the stage school, upcoming events and their background.

Michelle and Lucy-Rose say: “(We) offer a wide array of dance classes such as ballet, modern, jazz tech, stretch, lyrical, contemporary, acrobatics, musical theatre, drama and more.”

“Rollason Stage School have a great insight to the show business industry with students already having professionally performed. We offer students to take part in exams, competitions, professional shows, fetes and more.”

Proving the perfect duo to prime the youngsters for a future in performing is the extensive experience of principals Michelle and Lucy-Rose. The organisation was established in 2002 by Michelle, a professional booker, choreographer and ex professional dancer and whose alumni went on to work in professional television, film and theatre, with credits including BBC Eastenders, ITV The Harlots and BBC The Big School.

In 2018 Michelle became a qualified examiner and adjudicator and daughter Lucy-Rose took some of the reins. Lucy-Rose also runs a boutique agency called LJ Artistes with her brother and specialty act Tommy J, with clients all over the UK working under their management. She will be performing this summer at the Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth as a professional dancer and syncronised swimmer.

Last summer Tommy J Rollason appeared as the warm up act for the legendary ‘Grumbleweeds’ and is currently working in Scarborough in ‘Musicals Meets Variety.’ He recently performed with sister Lucy-Rose for celebrities such as Brian May, earning themselves a standing ovation for their performance.

Michelle’s husband Sean ‘Rollo’ Rollason has been in show business for 30 years appearing in pantomime, cruises and variety shows. He was elected to be part of the world’s most exclusive show business fraternity ‘The Grand Order of Water Rats’ and won the title of ‘Baby Rat’ from Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain.

Recently, Rollason Stage School competed at Boston Dance Festival and succeeded in bringing numerous medals and trophies, with some sections having as many as 20 competitors. They have also recently relocated their base to Dersingham Village Centre and are currently in the process of raising money for new portable mirrors.

Michelle and Lucy-Rose acknowledge their success and the bright future for the stage school, stating: “We are now working towards our extremely busy summer season (of) 2019/20, where our students will be appearing in professional shows around the country.”

“They will taking to the Princess Theatre stage in ‘The Great British Seaside Special’ for Tony Peers Productions, directed by Linda Newport and Choreographed by Lucy and Michelle Rollason. This will open on the 1st August with shows at 2:30pm and 7pm, and following that shows will be held on 8th, 15th and 22nd August.”

“RSS will also be appearing in Tony Peers’ Production of ‘Festival Of Fun’ at Scarborough Open Air Theatre which is Europe’s largest outdoor theatre.”

“We also have another dance competition coming up in October… and then of course it’s straight onto Pantomime! Oh yes it is! This year Rollason Stage School will be providing the ensemble for Tony Peers’ production of ‘Dick Whittington and His Cat’ at the Princess Theatre (and) we can’t wait!”
