1,816 Tesco employees are facing possible redundancy as part of changes to bakeries in its large supermarkets, it has been announced today.
The retailer blamed the change on a “shift in customer tastes and preferences” with fewer sales of traditional loaves of bread.
58 of Tesco’s bakeries will be converted to be able to finish off pre-baked products in-store and 201 will only bake some of its most popular items from scratch.
Due to this shift toward simplified routines the store will be cutting the number of colleagues working in the bakeries.
The overhaul is set to place from May this year.
Tesco has 12 superstores with bakeries in Norfolk, including one in Hunstanton.
Jason Tarry, UK & ROI CEO, said:
“We need to adapt to changing customer demand and tastes for bakery products so that we continue to offer customers a market-leading bakery range in store. We know this will be very difficult for colleagues who are impacted, and our priority is to support them through this process. We hope that many will choose to stay with us in alternative roles.”
