Sports Update - W/E 18th & 19th October

Local football round up, Snooker season under way, West Norfolk Rugby Club flying and local man takes leap for charity.

Football

In the Conference League North, King’s Lynn slipped to 2-1 home defeat against high flying AFC Fylde. Captain, Michael Clunan, scored for Lynn after the visitors had gone two up in the first half, but the Linnets couldn’t find an equaliser. Manager, Joe Simpson, said, “First half, nowhere near it, second half, a lot better. We gave ourselves too much to do and it’s getting really, really annoying as I know what the boys can do.” Lynn travel to Worksop Town tomorrow evening (Tuesday 21st).

In the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division Heacham FC will see it as two points dropped in their 1-1 home draw with fellow strugglers Cornard United. Jake Poore with the goal. New signing Callum Howe, from Soham Town was voted man of the match by sponsors Heacham Manor.

Chairman, Sam Pishorn, said, “We should have been 3-0 up by half time but you have to put the ball in the net. The lads are playing well and I am confident we will turn things around.” Heacham travel to Fakenham Town tomorrow night in a League Cup tie (Tuesday 21st, 7.45pm Kick off).

Ingoldisthorpe FC made the long trip to Hempnall in the County Cup. Traffic problems meant a delay and no warm up, but they performed admirably to draw 0-0, only to lose 4-3 on penalties. Disappointed Chairman, Eddie Herbert, said, “The lads played well but we went out on the lottery that is penalties.”

In Division One of the North West Norfolk League, Dersingham Rovers ‘A’ secured an impressive 4-2 win against visitors Terrington Tigers Youth Reserves. A Sonny Devlin hat-trick and a Nathan Mitchell goal enough to bag all three points.

In Division Two, Ingoldisthorpe Reserves remain unbeaten as they came from behind to beat West Winch William Burt Reserves in a feisty affair. These are the games they need to win to maintain a promotion push. The impressive Ryan Young with both goals having only just returned from an operation. They are up to 2nd.

Dersingham Women were involved in game of the weekend as they drew 5-5 with higher level Brandall Bolts Women in the County Cup, before heartbreakingly losing 4-3 on penalties.

Rugby Union

The men’s West Norfolk Rugby team beat Shelford ll’s at their South Wootton base on Saturday. After a tight first half, they ran out convincing 30-17 winners to continue their great start to the season, where they are presently unbeaten and joint top in Division One of the Eastern Counties League.

Town & Around will be down to feature both teams in the coming months.

Massingham ‘A’ and Bircham presently lead the way, although last year’s champions, Conservative Club ‘B’, are hot on their tails in 3rd, whilst Massingham ‘B’ have a game in hand in 4th. Performance of the season so far goes to Luke Fryett who has won all of his matches.
