Cricket

In the Norfolk Cricket Alliance League, Bircham have done their title aspirations no harm at all with a six wicket win over Martham CC. Four wickets from Will Faulkner and half century’s apiece for John King and Liam Crompton were enough to return the local side to the summit in Division Two. They face a crucial title deciding match on Saturday as they travel to second placed Horsford 2nd XI.

In Division Three, Sandringham leapfrogged opponents Great Melton 2nd XI in a low scoring match. Peter Brassett’s four wickets the pick of the match statistics as they won by six wickets. Sandringham now sit comfortably in second place with just two matches to go.

In Division Four, Snettisham lost by 59 runs to Swaffham CC. Despite a century from Ryan Twiddy and a half century from Lewis Jeavons, their host’s target of 296 proved to be too tall an order to chase down. Swaffham move into second at the expense of Snettisham.

In Division One of the Norfolk Cricket League, Thornham’s promotion challenge took a big hit as they surprisingly lost to bottom club Castle Rising, slipping from second to fifth place in the process. Thornham lost both openers, Chris Burgess and Barney Gilder in the first three overs and never recovered as they fell 25 runs short of their target. Snettisham 2nds may have done Thornham a favour though, as they held fellow promotion challengers, Saham Toney, to a rare tie.

Football

Heacham FC recorded their first win of the season as they beat Suffolk based, Woodbridge Town, 2-1 in a tempestuous match at their Station Road HQ this weekend. Both team’s had a player sent off but goals by Man of the Match, Joe Jackson and Matt Prudence were enough to secure a very welcome three points. A magnificent late penalty save by home goalkeeper, Aaron Watson, proving pivotal. Manager, Paul Hunt, said, “we put in a hard graft today but were deserved winners. There are some tough teams in this Division and we proved we can compete with anyone”. Having lost their first three games by the odd goal, Heacham have now played four of the top six teams and will hope to build on this success.
