On the courts, over 1,000 players participated across the Open, Junior and Veteran categories throughout the week across 39 courts, bigger than Wimbledon!
There was a feeling of poignancy at this year’s Hunstanton Lawn Tennis Tournament, as John Barrell, who was a familiar figure at the tournament for many years and President since 1990, died in March. Organiser, Chris Holt said, “when it came to ‘set up week’ this year there was an empty void where my main man and his valuable help and practical abilities were missed. We owe him so much and will miss him greatly”. Sir Marcus Setchell will take over the presidency from John. On the courts, over 1,000 players participated across the Open, Junior and Veteran categories throughout the week across 39 courts, bigger than Wimbledon! The tournament first took place in the early 1920’s and is still well attended by players, new and old, experienced and novice, from across the country. Most famously, Ann Jones, who participated in the 60’s, went on to win the Ladies’ singles title at Wimbledon in 1969. A number of boutique stalls, food stands and a beer tent kept the many spectators well nourished and entertained as they enjoyed the high quality tennis on display. The Hoste Arms of Burnham Market sponsored the event. Chris Holt and his many volunteers managed to ensure everything ran to schedule. Well almost. The finals were brought forward to “Finals Friday” due to the weekend weather forecast. Seth Briggs-Williams In the main Open events, number three seed, Seth Briggs-Williams from Wisbech, won the Node Building Consultancy Gentleman’s Singles Trophy, beating sixth seed, William Cheer from Boston, 6-0, 6-3 in the final. Boston based player and number one seed, Alice Gamman, beat the unseeded local girl Daisy Waddison in straight sets to win the Ladies’ title. The chosen tournament charity this year were the National Coastwatch Institution (Brancaster) who were presented with a cheque for £630 by tournament Chairman, Andrew Creighton. Round Robin Winners with Secretary Chris Holt Organiser Chris Holt, now in his 49th year of organising this famous tournament said, “we are really appreciative of the support from the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, Alive West Norfolk and to the ground staff, headed up by Johnny Ives, for keeping the courts in a first-class condition. Hope to see you all again next year”. First serve Images: Chris Holt |
