The Friday Friendship Group helped in the fight against cancer at their 'World’s Biggest Coffee Morning' raising £358.51.
The first ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990, a rather small local fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. The idea was such a simple, yet effective one that it was suggested it be repeated nationally and in 1991 over 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then, it has raised over £138 million in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.
“One in two of us will face cancer at some point in our lives and the money we raised at our Coffee Morning will help to make sure that no one has to face it alone,” said Dawn Davies, one of the Friendship Group’s committee members.
Members of the Friendship Group worked hard, baking delicious cakes, promoting the event, organising a raffle and bric-a-brac stall whilst others beavered away in the kitchen, keeping the tea and coffee flowing.
The treasurer of the group Susan Turner reported: “as a result of the coffee morning we managed to raise £358.51 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.
"Our thanks go to the local businesses in Hunstanton who very generously supported the event by donating raffle prizes.
"Our thanks also go to the public who donated items for the bric-a-brac stall and of course, to Hunstanton Town Council for their support, guidance and taking the Friendship Group under their ‘umbrella’ during the covid pandemic”.
The Mayor Cllr Adrian Winnington and Mayoress Catherine Winnington officially welcomed all to the recently refurbished Town Hall and praised the Friendship Group for their hard work not only at the Macmillan Coffee Morning event but for the good work they are doing to address loneliness and isolation in the community.
The Friendship Group meets every Friday in the Community Centre, Avenue Road, Hunstanton. A warm welcome awaits all.
