Just sing, sing together – Your Choir hits the right note

“The response has been quite overwhelming” said Musical Director Mike Tandy

Throughout the second week of January the highly anticipated Your Choir was launched. Five sessions across the region each attracted 35-70 singers to the taster nights that began with a few vocal warm ups including the chorus from 'Just Sing', a song written for The Trolls movie which has a few key changes within it that enables not only singers to warm their voices, but also to see how much range people have within their voices and what harmony part would suit them best within the choir.

After the warm up they moved on to the first of many songs they will learn over the 12 week term - Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and The Waves.

Mike said "It's been really fantastic to see so many different types of people give Your Choir a try. We've had some lovely comments from people who'd never been to a Choir before saying how much they'd enjoyed it and that they'd be back again."

Ho-Yun Simpson attended the Hunstanton Town Hall session. She said: “Choir taster on Thursday evening in Hunstanton, casting my mind back, oh yes, the night I got out of the house – that doesn't happen often!

“I've been to a choir before but not for nearly a decade, walking into the Town Hall I felt a little nervous; no need.

“I sat in the section where I thought I could manage best; Mike soon got us going with a bit of a natter and gentle warm ups, then two hours passed by quickly and pretty enjoyably, singing and listening to "I'm Walking On Sunshine" (the tunes are suggested by choir members) being guided by Mike on the keys and a good sense of humour (along with ‘mummy’ Gemma and his actual mum, Lynne) - it's a family affair!

“We may have sounded OK, but can he make us sound great? I think he can actually.

“The Town Hall might have been a bit cold and draughty on the night but I found the welcome and company to be very warm and informal, and, for me that's what it's about. “I'll be back next week and I am looking forward to meeting everyone else and singing together. Maybe even getting better at singing myself.”

Your Choir meets at: Hunstanton Town Hall, Springwood High School, the Scout Hut on Beulah Street in King's Lynn and The Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech. Go to https://www.yourchoir.co.uk/
