Cllr Tony Bishopp appointed Mayor and Chair Cllr Mark Williamson named Deputy Mayor

Hunstanton Town Council is pleased to announce the election of Councillor Tony Bishopp as the new Mayor and Chair of the Council, following the Annual Meeting held on Wednesday, 28th May 2025.

Cllr Bishopp, who has served the community in a variety of roles, brings considerable experience and dedication to his new position. He succeeds Cllr Michael Ruston, who was warmly thanked for her service and leadership during her term.

Also elected at the meeting was Cllr Mark Williamson, who will serve as Deputy Mayor and Deputy Chair. A proactive member of the council, Cllr Williamson expressed his commitment to supporting the Mayor and representing the residents of Hunstanton.

Speaking after his election, Mayor Cllr Bishopp gave the following statement:

"I haven't prepared a formal speech, as I genuinely didn’t expect to be voted in tonight—so first and foremost, thank you to everyone who supported me. I’d also like to thank members of the public for attending this evening’s meeting.

It is truly an honour to be elected Mayor and Chair of Hunstanton Town Council. There is a lot that goes on within the council that many residents might not be aware of. But the more involved you become, the more meetings you attend, the more you’ll understand just how much work is happening behind the scenes in our town.

Sometimes I speak with residents who believe the council can’t make a difference—or worse, who spread unfounded accusations like councillors accepting 'brown envelopes'. I call them the 'keyboard warriors'. Rather than posting anonymously online, I would much rather they come to a meeting and share their concerns directly. We’re always open to listening. Constructive criticism is not only welcome—it helps us grow and improve.

To my fellow councillors: I hope we can begin today with a renewed spirit of open communication. If there are issues, concerns, or ideas—let’s discuss them face to face. Let’s avoid going around the houses. Direct conversations help us resolve matters quickly and build stronger working relationships.

I’d also like to encourage all councillors to get more involved in the council's work, particularly with community events and external meetings. I recently attended an LGR (Local Government Reorganisation) meeting via Zoom, it is important we try to make time, even if our lives are busy. The more we contribute, the more effective we’ll be as a council.

Looking ahead, there are some practical matters I’d like to prioritise—such as reviewing our meeting venues, addressing upcoming changes to allotment regulations and looking in to the fire safety requirements for resuming meetings in the council chamber.

It’s going to be a busy year. We may not know exactly what’s ahead until September, but I am confident that—together—we can continue to serve Hunstanton with dedication and integrity.

Thank you again for this opportunity. It is a privilege to serve as your Mayor."

Cllr Mark Williamson, newly appointed Deputy Mayor, added:

"It’s a privilege to be appointed Deputy Mayor, and I am keen to support the Mayor and help deliver positive outcomes for Hunstanton."

Hunstanton Town Council looks forward to a productive and engaging year ahead under the leadership of Cllr Bishopp and Cllr Williamson.
