Now in its 14th year of operation, Hunstanton Charity Shop has provided the funds for a portable defibrillator for the Hunstanton Promenade parkrun, taking its overall donations to local groups to a staggering £90,000.
Volunteers from the shop, Heather Rees and Sandie O’Donnell presented the machine to the event director Mike Shaw and the core team on a Saturday morning in March immediately after 83 runners took part in the parkrun’s 106th Hunstanton event.
Angela Green from Hunstanton Charity shop said: “It was an absolute pleasure to purchase a defibrillator machine for Hunstanton Park run; our shop loves to support local groups and we always try to support where we can.
“The thought that a simple device could save a life is truly satisfying to me and my husband Kevin and to all our volunteers who give their time for free to help raise funds for things like this.
“We wish the park run many, many more hours of safe and happy running.” Angela Green shop owner.
The parkrun is organised by the core team of Mike and seven race directors, all volunteers, and the event attracts up to 150 participants during the summer and a growing number of park walkers.
Mike is holding the machine and Sandie the backpack it is carried in.
Mike shaw said: “Hunstanton Promenade parkrun are extremely grateful to the Hunstanton Charity Shop for providing us with the funding to purchase our own portable defibrillator, which we will hopefully never have to use but will give further reassurance to those who take part in our weekly parkrun and also to our volunteers.
“It will be available to us from week to week and will be particularly valuable when we are using our summer route where currently there is only one community defibrillator located on the clifftops.
“Thank you to all of those who have support the charity shop to in turn support local charities and good causes.
“Please remember parkrun is free, weekly starting at 9am and you can walk, jog or run the 5km distance or join the friendly volunteer group. We are currently still meeting at the Sailing Club on the North Prom until Easter when we move up to the clifftops for the rest of spring , summer and into early autumn.”
