Heacham WFC in National Cup action
The club are inviting everyone to pop down throughout the day on Saturday and relish all the action whilst enjoying a cup of tea or an alcoholic beverage or two in the clubhouse.
Heacham Walking Football Club are venturing into uncharted territory on Saturday, as they host Lincolnshire based side, Stamford Strollers, in the first round of the WFA National Cup Over 50's on their 3G pitch (1pm kick off).
The relatively newly formed club have faired well against teams across Norfolk in recent seasons, so go into the game brimming with confidence. Their opponents, however, should not be taken lightly as they field a couple of England Walking Football internationals with a pool of players in excess of 150 to choose from.
Manager of the local side, Steve Watson, is looking forward to the occasion, “we have virtually got a full strength side available and will give it a right good go. We are wise enough not to underestimate Stamford, but I know we have the potential to cause an upset. Six a side is a different ball game on a big pitch, so we will need to use the rotation system strategically".
Heacham WFC hold training sessions every Monday on the 3G pitch from 5pm. The popular session usually gets in excess of 20 players each week. Steve encourages anyone over 50 to come on down, adding, “it is excellent for your fitness and mental well-being, we have a great bunch down here and there is a wonderful camaraderie and social element”.
It is going to prove to be a busy day at the club on Saturday as the first team are also in action in their final home league game against Long Melford (3pm), whilst, in the morning, the U7’s play against King’s Lynn SC, the U9’s welcome Terrington Tigers, the U10’s Magpies are up against Walpole Community Youth FC and the U10’s Minors host The Wootons Youth FC.
