Council leader urges residents to have their say

Cllr Alistair Beales reminds public their 'voice matters' on whether King's Lynn should get its own council

Currently King's Lynn doesn't have its own governing authority, being run by the wider Borough Council of West Norfolk.

The Government is looking at options to reorganise Norfolk’s councils, replacing it with a larger unitary authority.  And apart from King’s Lynn, every other part of West Norfolk has its own Parish/Town council, which will remain under the reorganisation plans.

Cllr Alistair Beales, Leader of the Borough Council, says, “The Government’s ambition to reorganise Norfolk into larger local government areas rightly raises questions around maintaining localised democratic representation and our civic identity in King’s Lynn, Norfolk’s largest town, because currently we do not have a town council.

“As borough councillors, we would like to hear your views to help us decide whether, or not, to set up a Parish/Town council for King’s Lynn, introducing a level of local democracy that does not currently exist in the town, and which could also be one way of continuing to have a local Mayor as we have had since around 1285.

“No decisions have yet been made and we intend to be strongly guided by the outcome of this consultation. Your voice matters, so please take part and share your views.”

If one was created, members would be elected locally and they would be responsible for services such as parks and playgrounds.  However, setting up one would come at a cost, most likely meaning an increase in council tax.

The public consultation runs until March 27th  - click here for more info: https://www.west-norfolk.gov.u...
