Community housing development

I’m Anna Clarke, Community Housing Delivery Officer, working with the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk on a new development in Hunstanton.

You may have read about the proposed new community-led housing development at The Sheep Field in the December issue of Town and Around.

The Sheep Field, a council-owned site behind Tesco, has been identified for a community housing development, which will bring much-needed affordable homes to the area. Preference for these homes will be given to local people who cannot afford the increasing house prices in the town, both for rent and to buy.

There will be approximately 30 new homes on this new development, which will be predominately affordable with a smaller number of market sale properties. The affordable homes will be available through various schemes including part buy, part rent. By offering low-cost home ownership, this scheme could help people get onto the housing ladder.

This development also provides the opportunity to create a new community, which will have a real say in some of the design aspects of the new homes and be a part of the long-term future management of the development.

Potential residents of this development

  • could be involved in starting to create a community before the homes are built
  • would work with your potential new neighbours to develop some future management arrangements for the site
  • would be involved from the start – this would include making decisions about how the open areas around your potential new home will look and be used
  • would be able to have a say in what your new home might look, including kitchen, bathroom and some elements of internal layout

Over the next few weeks, I will be speaking to a number of community groups to let them know about this project and to ask them to spread the word about the opportunities to get involved.  If you would like me to come along to talk to your community group please email me at Anna.Clarke@north-norfolk.gov.uk.

In February, I will also be holding a community consultation and engagement event, which will enable interested people to come to see and hear more about the development, discuss their eligibility and register their interest in getting involved.

If you are looking for the opportunity to own your own home and be part of community development, come along to this event at the Town Hall on Thursday, 22 February 2018, from 2pm – 7pm.  If you know anyone else in the area that might be interested, please pass on the information and encourage them to come along.
