“It’s incredibly hard to close the doors on something that means so much to me,” said Harry.
Cheshire and Oldfield, Norfolk’s boutique bed specialist, has today announced it will be closing its doors in St Nicholas’ Court, Dersingham.
After just seven months of trading, the store will officially close on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025, following a short but memorable chapter in North West Norfolk's retail scene.
Founded by local entrepreneur Harry Oldfield, Cheshire and Oldfield was established with a deeply personal mission: to bring handcrafted, sustainably made beds and mattresses to thecommunity while honouring a family legacy of craftsmanship that spans generations.
The store, named in tribute to Harry’s great aunt Sylvia Cheshire and great-grandmother Ivy May, opened in October 2024 with high hopes and strong values rooted in British bed-making excellence. Despite early excitement and a warm response from customers, the store has struggled to navigate the challenging retail environment, citing rising operational costs and reduced footfall since December as the key reasons behind the difficult decision to close.
“This store was more than just a business — it was a passion project shaped by years of planning, personal savings, and my family's commitment to doing things properly. But the significantly low footfall and economic realities have caught up with us, and it’s no longer sustainable,” said Harry.
To mark its final weeks, Cheshire and Oldfield will host a Closing Down Sale, with the store finally closing on Saturday, May 3rd. Customers can shop a wide range of ex-display beds, mattresses, and accessories at up to 75% discounts, offering one last opportunity to invest in the store’s signature products at heavily reduced prices.
From organic Dartmoor wool mattresses by Enchanted House to wrought iron and brass frames crafted with heritage and care, the collections at Cheshire and Oldfield were carefully chosen for their sustainability, longevity, and timeless design. The store quickly became known for its personal service, curated British brands, and ethical ethos — a rare combination in today’s marketplace.
“While this chapter is coming to an end, I remain incredibly proud of what we built in Dersingham,” Harry added. “The values that guided Cheshire and Oldfield aren’t going anywhere. I’m taking time now to reflect and explore new possibilities for the future — perhaps in a different form, but with the same heart.
"Cheshire and Oldfield extend sincere thanks to its loyal customers, supporters, and the local community, who welcomed the store with such warmth and enthusiasm; your support has meant the world."
