Chequers to Host Comedy Night as part of Re-launch

The Chequers in Thornham re-opened its doors last Summer for drink sales after a short period of closure.

The quintessential pub has been taken on by the Chestnut Group who have 18 pubs with similar character across East Anglia, including the Lifeboat Inn and the Gin Trap.

New management duo, Joe Outram and Emma Collison, along with Golden Retriever Rudy, have put a lot of effort into the re-opening having previously ran the Rupert Brooke in Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, famous for the BBC series, Grantchester. Emma said, “we wanted to return the pub to its traditional look, with a country feel and roaring log fire that caters for the locals in the Winter, whilst making it popular to holiday makers as well during the Summer season. Basically putting ‘pub’ back into the local pub”.

They will be releasing their new menu of home cooked classics with a modern twist for an official launch on the 24th January. They will also be providing breakfasts and brunch for all guests from Saturday 25th January.

To kickstart a 2025 programme of events, a comedy night, arranged in tandem with Hooma Comedy, will take place on Wednesday, 29th January (doors open at 7.30pm).

The pub is believed to date back to 1800 but could be much older as Pevsner & Wilson in ‘The Buildings of England’ date the oldest part of the property to circa 1680. Don’t be put off if you hear the odd door opening and shutting by their own accord, blame that on ex landlord Les Tucker who is believed to haunt the place. And should you hear a growling sound you can be sure Billy Howard has returned. There’s a vent between the public bar and the old outside loos and he took great delight in groaning through the vent when in the loo. Rest assured, the menu has improved since then.

Hooma Comedy is a comedy club based in Norwich who champion local comedians across the region. Renowned wit, Martin Westgate, will MC the event which is part of a tour show by talented former X Factor contestant and Norfolk’s very own viral internet sensation, “East Anglian Boy”, Leon Mallett. The tour, named “Alright my darlin’” will feature jokes, stories and songs from Leon’s career. Tickets for the comedy night are £10 in advance or £12.50 on the door and can be purchased online at https://www.jokepit.com/comedy-in/skegness/thornham-comedy-club-leon-mallett-alright-my-darli/25142 .
