Celebrations in King's Lynn to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day

The Ukrainian community and supporters gathered in the town for a variety of entertainment.

More than a hundred people from across West Norfolk, as well as Norwich, Fakenham, Wisbech and further afield came together at Tuesday Market Place for celebrations (24th August).

The event was hosted by Tamara Kartoziia, a Ukrainian resident who arrived in West Norfolk when Russia invaded and the conflict began, sharing insights into Ukraine’s history and current situation.

And for the second-year, crowds enjoyed performances from Igor Grohotsky, the winner of 'The Voice of Ukraine' 2014, who also led the Ukrainian national anthem.

Cllr Jo Rust, Cabinet member for people and communities at the borough council, says, “Independence Day holds great significance in Ukrainian culture, and we are pleased to support our newest community members in celebrating this important occasion. While they may be unable to mark this day in Ukraine itself, we are proud to help them honour their heritage and share aspects of their culture with us.”

People also took part in a spontaneous Ukrainian dance, called Kolomyika.

And children enjoyed a variety of activities provided by Marina Balloons, including face painting, colouring, and games.  Ukrainian volunteers also organised dance and singing activities.

Organisers say the event exemplifies the resilience and unity of the Ukrainian community in West Norfolk, as well as the warmth and support of the local residents who came together to celebrate Ukraine’s independence and culture.
