Celebrating 50 years of music and memories

Hospital Radio Lynn marks a milestone anniversary.

Hospital Radio Lynn, the dedicated radio station broadcasting to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn, is excited to celebrate its 50th anniversary on Wednesday, 17 April 2024.

Since relocating to the hospital site in 1980, the station has consistently been a source of comfort, entertainment, and news for patients, staff, and visitors, evolving through decades to remain an integral part of hospital life.

Originally established to serve the three hospitals of King’s Lynn – St James, Hardwick Road, and The General Hospital – Hospital Radio Lynn has advanced into a modern broadcasting service, accessible online and through Alexa, ensuring listeners are never more than a call or click away from a friendly voice.

David Llewellyn, chair of Hospital Radio Lynn, shared his reflections on reaching this significant milestone: “Celebrating our 50th anniversary is a monumental achievement for Hospital Radio Lynn and the broader community we serve.

“This milestone highlights the lasting impact of radio in uplifting spirits, entertaining, and bringing people together, especially during challenging times. The pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, pushing us to innovate and adapt while remaining committed to our mission of brightening the days of those within The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I’m incredibly proud of our journey, our resilience through the pandemic’s impact, and our community’s unwavering support.”

The station’s continued resilience is a testament to its dedicated volunteers. In honour of its 50th anniversary, Hospital Radio Lynn will host a day of special broadcasts from 7am on Wednesday 17 April. Listeners are encouraged to call in with song requests on 01553 819707, entering them into a draw to win an Amazon Echo Dot, enhancing the day’s celebrations with the joy of music and the chance of a prize.

Hospital Radio Lynn is inviting new volunteers to join its team, offering opportunities in presenting, ward request collection, and technical operations. Volunteering at Hospital Radio Lynn offers a unique chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of hospital patients and staff.

The challenges of the pandemic, including a significant impact on donations, highlighted the importance of community support for Hospital Radio Lynn. As the station looks forward to the future, it continues to appeal for donations to be able to fulfil its mission of providing care and entertainment. Support from the community is vital for maintaining and upgrading equipment, expanding the music library, and ensuring the station can continue delivering its special blend of comfort and joy to those who need it most.

Listeners can tune into Hospital Radio Lynn online at hospitalradiolynn.org.uk, via Alexa, or within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
