Be scareful - it's almost Halloween!

In the mood for a few ghost stories? I’ve been chatting to Nicky Proctor, who runs the Original King’s Lynn Ghost Tour.

“I do think people like to feel a bit scared,” Nicky says, “They don’t want to jump out of their skin, but they like to feel a little bit on edge. I find that especially now, when we’re doing the after dark tours, people are that little bit more jumpy now it’s dark.”

Nicky tells me she’s always been interested in the paranormal, and for the last four years has taken people around the town recounting ghostly tales. It begins at Saturday Market Place with stops like Devil’s Alley - where legend has it that the devil was cornered by a local priest, stamping his foot in rage and leaving a footprint.

But Nicky’s favourite is The Exorcist House. Through the grounds of St Nicholas' Chapel the cottage dates back to 1635 - built where medieval exorcists used to do battle with evil spirits. And it’s where a ghost of a small boy apparently likes to make an appearance during the Mart Fair.

“I think people are shocked that we’ve even got an Exorcist House in King’s Lynn, when I was putting the tour together I spoke to a lady that lived there for about 25 years. She told me she’d woken up in the middle of the night and heard fairground noises and heard pennies jangling, she sat up in bed and saw a small boy dressed in Victorian clothing in the corner of the room. She said that happened twice.”

Not a place I’d like to spend a night. Then there’s The Medieval Merchant’s House, which Nicky tells me is home to two ghosts.

“I talk about a window where there’s meant to have been an occurrence, nobody on the tour has ever seen a thing at that window, but there is another window where 3 people have seen something.”

Chills yet? Well there’re 26 stops on the tour - so maybe one of the stories will spook you.

I ask if she ever gets scared. “I run a paranormal team as well, that came about just after the ghost tours started, I thought I’m going to take this to another level now. We were at True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum recently doing investigations.”

Just for a bit of background it boasts almost 40 spirits, with reports of doors slamming, paintings being knocked off walls, and (one of my biggest fears) sightings of the ghost of a young child.

“A couple of times I really jumped - we call it a Scooby doo moment, it happened in one of the cottages at True’s Yard.”

She ends by saying, “Some people like the adrenaline of being scared, I do find the women tend to cling on to each other quite tightly on certain parts of the tour.”

I think I’d be the same!
