The Well Café is a welcoming community space at the heart of Ingoldisthorpe, created as part of the ministry of St Michael & All Angels Church. Since opening in 2022, it has become a place where neighbours gather for expertly crafted barista coffee, homemade cakes, and genuine connection. Rooted in Christian hospitality, The Well offers warmth, conversation, and care to everyone who walks through the door—whether they come with faith, curiosity, or none at all.

The Barista Evangelist plays a key part in shaping the daily life and ministry of The Well. This part-time role blends excellent café service with a gentle, authentic expression of Christian faith. You will help manage and operate the café, prepare high-quality drinks (training provided), and create a happy, welcoming environment for all. Alongside the practical café work, the role carries a pastoral dimension: offering a listening ear, sharing faith naturally when appropriate, and helping The Well continue to be a place of kindness, and community.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Barista Evangelist, The Well Café

Location; Church Hall, Hill Road, Ingoldisthorpe PE31 6NZ

Hours; 8.30 am to 1.00 pm, Monday / Wednesday / Friday (3 days a week) (Please note that a Job Share may be possible)

Pay: £13.00 per hour during training / probation period (3 months)

£13.50 after passing probation

Job Purpose;

To manage and operate the Café, share their Christian faith, and provide a happy welcoming place for all regardless of faith or none, to host and serve good barista coffee, other drinks and cakes.

Main Duties;

  • • Mange and run the Well Café, including;
    • o Opening and closing the building,
    • o Setting up the main room in a Café format,
    • o Making and serving barista coffees and other drinks, and cakes,
    • o Keeping a record of items sold,
    • o Taking payment for sales by cash or card,
    • o Producing a daily summary of sales and stock used.
    • o Keeping the Café clean and tidy when in operation,
    • o Anticipating when stocks are likely to run low,
    • o Ordering supplies, including coffee, cakes, milk, etc. when required,
    • o Cleaning up and putting away furniture at the end of each session.
    • • Ensure that the Café has a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
    • • Identify when it would be appropriate to share Christian faith and beliefs with customers and visitors, and then do so in an appropriate and real way.
    • • Look after the keys to the building and keep them in a secure location (as a Key Holder).
    • • Co-ordinate and manage the activities of volunteers in the Café, to ensure that adequate cover is provided.
    • • Update the internal and external notice boards and keep them looking attractive to people passing by them.
    • • Co-ordinate publicity for The Well, in café, social platforms, posters and other creative ways.
    • • Liaise and work with the Rector, Curate, Caretaker, Café Church, Youth Group team, Volunteers, Benefice Administrator, etc. as appropriate.
    • • Carry out any other required duties, as appropriate for the role.

    PERSON SPECIFICATION

    The following criteria are considered necessary (essential) or helpful (desirable), in order to be able to carry out this role.

    Applicants will be expected to demonstrate how they meet each of the criteria in their application, and at interview (if shortlisted for interview).

    Essential;

    1. 1. Qualifications;
      1. a. A committed Christian with a living faith, active in growing and nurturing their own faith and able to share that with others.
      1. 2. Skills;

      a. Able to communicate easily with a wide range of people.

      b. Honest and trustworthy.

      c. Organised in the workplace.

      d. Friendly and approachable.

      e. Good listener and pastorally sensitive

      1. f. Willing and able to engage with others about their Christian faith.
      2. g. Confidently able to support, encourage enquiries and discussions of Christian faith to believers and people of no faith, sensitively without causing offense.
      1. 3. Safeguarding*;
        1. a. Demonstrate no criminal convictions through the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) check as appropriate for the role.
        2. b. Requirement to follow best practice in safeguarding and complete all appropriate Safeguarding training. To liaise with Parish Safeguarding Officer and/or Rector when required for safeguarding.

        Desirable;

        1. 1. Experience;

        a. Working in a client facing role.

        1. b. Previous responsibility for taking payments and reconciling those payments at the end of a work shift.
        2. c. Experience of sharing your faith with others.

        DBS – will be required after a Conditional Offer has been made and before a Final Offer is confirmed.

        Training – will need to be undertaken and the required pass score reached, after the Final Offer has been made and before the start of employment.)
