Alan’s 45 miles in 20 hours for Monica’s March

Alan’s 45 miles in 20 hours for Monica’s March
Alan Smith ready for his walking challenge for Macmillan

A 77 year old man will set off from Cromer at midnight on 30th August and walk the 45 miles to Hunstanton to raise funds for Macmillan.

Alan Smith from Holme has chosen the coastal path for his walk that should see him arrive at O'Quigley's Bar in Hunstanton at 8pm.

He's no stranger to long distance events, both walking and cycling, and his training regime has included doing several miles a day carrying a rucksack full of bricks. Alan said: “I haven’t tested myself to this standard for many years and although I have trained well, it will be a real challenge, my target is to reach Hunstanton by 8pm, a 20-hour walking marathon."

Alan’s wife Monica, who Alan describes as “inspirational”, has cancer for the second time and he and his family want to raise money for this worthwhile cause. The July issue of Town and Around (page 9) tells the story of Monica’s sons and their friends completing a golf marathon to raise money and awareness for the Macmillan organisation; the boys have raised, so far, some £3.500.

Most of us at some time in our lives have been touched by the work of Macmillan, I know I have, and we will want to support this epic walk with a donation. We at Town and Around want to help Alan promote this fundraiser and ask you, dear reader, for your support. You can make a donation at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/monicasmarchmacmillan
