A knitting tribute for Remembrance Sunday

Dersingham's Knit and Natter group create another winning postbox topper.

As I arrive a few of the ladies from Dersingham’s Knit and Natter group are busy putting up the new post box topper along Hunstanton Road - adding some last minute touches.

And every single person that walks by stops to admire it. This is their fourth creation, and it's to commemorate Remembrance Sunday.

“It’s magnificent,” says Mike, who’s stopped to take a look, “You ladies are very talented, it gives you such a sense of community seeing things like this.”

“This one took us 6 weeks,” Kathy tells me, “We decided to do it a while back, so most of the knitters in the group did poppies for us, and Maureen is brilliant at making the figures. And we’re now putting it on. And we’re very pleased with it.”

I ask what it’s like getting so many lovely comments, “It spurs you on to do next one, which is already in the making!”

Kathy, Sally, Maureen Stacey and Maureen, members of Dersingham's Knit and Natter with their wonderful creation

Maureen Stacey, who’s knitted since she was 5, says a figure takes her 4 evenings to do. “When we did our first topper we didn’t know what the reaction would be - but it’s been amazing.

“What’s nice is it seems to have brought a lot of pleasure to people, grandparents have told us they bring their grandchildren to have a look. So that makes it worthwhile.

“We have a laugh whilst we’re doing it, the library staff I think sometimes they wonder what we’re talking about because we’re talking about pulling trousers down and putting things up trousers! And they laugh and say - it’s a good job we know what you’re doing!”

Time to get Mike Rivers, the postmaster, to come out and take a look. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” he says, “I don’t know how you have the patience. It’s really added something.

“The number of people that take interest in this, cars stop all the time and people jump out and take photos of it.  It's brilliant, thank you.”

“It’s a nice way to remember the sacrifices made,” adds Maureen, “And it gives people a smile for the day and that’s worth a lot.”  As she says that a lady stops and tells the group ‘you’ve brightened my day’.

As Kathy mentions the next topper is already in the making - a winter wonderland. I can’t wait!
