The Liberal Democrats are delighted with the government decision for local government reform after the announcement that three unitary councils will be set up for Norfolk.

Norfolk Liberal Democrats County Councillor Rob Colwell said “this is the best news for West Norfolk, which will finally mean all decisions at levels of local government will be made by those in West Norfolk, and no longer will we have to go to Norwich with a begging bowl. The implications of this announcement are huge and I hope the Liberal Democrats can now do for West Norfolk what they have done so far for Gaywood, with improvements and positive change where residents want it.

"After months of collaboration amongst Norfolk councils, we’ve successfully secured a model that matches our geography, respects our communities, and plays to the strengths of each area.

"This is a victory for localism, efficiency and most importantly, for every resident who wants decisions made closer to home.”

The Liberal Democrats welcome the decision saying it promises accessible services, shaped around real communities rather than a distant central authority, but also stronger democratic voice, with each unitary reflecting identifiable local identities.

Mr Colwell added that it also provides a practical framework for economic growth, with Norwich’s urban economy, West Norfolk’s market towns, and East Norfolk’s coastal communities each able to drive tailored development.
